A book I recently finished, Mistakes Were Made (But Not By Me), Why We Justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions and Hurtful Acts main take away was the slippery slope of self justification.
One step at a time, an act, a way of thinking, a position, a mindset is reinforced not by objectively reassessing the situation but rather by continuing to justify the series of events/decisions taking place. This can be applied to nearly every situation if you break it down step by step. Within the health and wellness world, it unfortunately is not uncommon to see division among “groups” of people taking polar opposite stances to reach a similar, if not exact same goal…. method of training, diet/nutrition etc etc.
How does someone avoid this “slippery slope” that is all-to-common?
1 Be honest while identifying your goals
2 Routinely assess progress and/or setbacks
3 Don’t be afraid to admit setbacks and/or failures to return to the original goal
Within your client(s);
1 Create an environment they feel comfortable in to allow honest communication
2 Listen to their goals and reasoning for pursuing
3 Routinely check-in, offering tailored advice
